"Where Did the Name TarHeels Originate?"
Did you know North Carolina, including our community, was the world's greatest producer of wood used to build our sailing fleet for 100 years? And in the construction of the CSS Ram Neuse! Come learn how we participated in the building of these beautiful ships with Mr. Harry Warren, Director, North Carolina Museum of Forestry. Mr. Warren will talk about the role of "Tar, Pitch, and Turpentine" and the Naval Stores history. Important to our area for over 200 years - from colonial times to the early 20th century. Mr. Warren will bring artifacts that all are sure to enjoy seeing!
Enhance your experience by attending the special tour of the CSS Neuse II, the only full-scale reproduction. See first hand the product built contributing to North Carolinians being named “TarHeels”. Walk the decks just as the soldiers did 150 years ago.
The Special Tour starts at 2pm located on the corner of Herritage and West Gordon Street. Mr. Warren’s program begins at 3pm in the Schechter Auditorium, Neuse Regional Library. Spend your Sunday afternoon with the whole family learning about our local history by stepping back in time. Come to one or both! We look forward to seeing you!
