BEYOND THE WALLS SERIES is part of the Friends of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library season of diverse programming, which will present Christal Brown as the first performer.  The Series' aim is to present lecturers, artists, dancers, and other talents who are Lenoir County natives and have gone Beyond the Walls to achieve honorable notoriety in their fields.  Beyond the Walls reaffirms that being from a small place like Lenoir County does not limit the success we can achieve. Beyond the Walls celebrates the rich heritage of our community. Originally from Kinston, Christal Brown is currently based in Bronx, NY.  She is the founder and artistic director of one of New York City’s premier modern dance companies, INSPIRIT.  Founded in 2000, INSPIRIT has been honored to show work around the country, including The Lincoln Theater in Washington, DC.  Through the growth of INSPIRIT, Brown has launched Project: BECOMING, a nationwide youth initiative for teen girls that builds self-esteem, promotes community involvement, and encourages social, individual, and academic responsibility.  Brown continues to teach and create works that redefine the art of dance. Brown will conduct a Project: BECOMING workshop on Saturday, February 18 at 10 a.m. in the Schechter Auditorium.  At 3 p.m., Christal Brown and INSPIRIT will present a modern dance recital in the Schechter Auditorium.  The dance company will discuss the creation and evolution of each original work.
